Stokes Senior Wins State Award!
Mr. Paul R. "Dick" Wilson. A Retired & Senior Volunteer in Stokes County, has been chosen as one of the 20 Medallion Award Winners for the State Of North Carolina 2008.
On November 20 at Magnolia Manor in Greensboro along with the other 19 recipients, Mr. Wilson was honored for his 21+ years of volunteer service through Forsyth Technical Community College. At the age of 85, Dick Wilson volunteers 2 nights each week at the Walnut Cove Public Library with the GED Program. And he has been doing this for the past 21 or more years. He has the energy of a twenty-year old, a sense of fun and mischief, and the kindness and concern of a person who was born with the heart of a teacher.
Dick has one mission as a tutor: he makes sure that every GED student who comes his way gets help on the level that they need it and in just the right amounts.
Dick sums up his devotion to his mission as a tutor pretty simply. He says that he just enjoys helping people. He feels he has had a full, rich life, and he just wants to give something back for all the good he enjoys. Dick will quickly tell you that the biggest thrill he gets from volunteering as a tutor is when a former student comes back to class and says, "I got my GED!"
